The Berkshire Review describes American violinist Shawn Moore as possessing “a very appealing directness in his approach. Apart from his impressive technical ability, there is not a trace of affectation in his playing…he tackles showy passages with an understated confidence, as if they are just music.” A keen chamber musician, Shawn was a founding member of the Kalmia String Quartet, which performed and recorded numerous works by American composer Joseph Summer, and can be heard on Parma and Albany Records.

As a solo artist, Shawn makes regular appearances at the Geneva Music Festival and the Bard Music Festival, concerts and music festivals in China, Korea and Thailand, and other engagements throughout the world,. Shawn is also a capable violist. Comfortable with a diverse variety of musical styles, from classical to electronic, Shawn has also collaborated with artists such as Paul Miller (AKA DJ Spooky) and well-known folk singer Natalie Merchant, among others. Alongside his two younger brothers, Shawn toured with Merchant in 2016 and can be heard on her most recent release, “Paradise Now”

As an admissions officer for Bard College, Shawn has had firsthand experience of the challenges associated with providing access to quality education, musical and otherwise, and is committed to supporting projects that will broaden exposure to music and further the goal of educating the next generation of musicians and listeners. Shawn has worked in Venezuela with El Sistema, and in China with the He Feng Foundation, and is committed to continuing this work both personally and via his various administrative roles.

A graduate of Bard College and Yale University, Shawn holds degrees in both music and Asian Studies, and speaks Mandarin and Korean. He has studied with Cyrus Forough, Ida and Ani Kavafian, and has been privileged to also learn from a long list of violin luminaries, including Ruggiero Ricci, Arnold Steinhardt, Roman Totenberg, Pinchas Zukerman and many others. Shawn was a 2013 – 2014 Yale Light Fellow to Korea. He resides in Beijing and concurrently holds a position as Bard’s East Asia Representative and Director of Bard College’s first international Early College.
